Prehistoric Cave of the Uzzo
This cave located at the centre of the Zingaro Nature Reserve is one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Sicily, fundamental to the knowledge of the evolution of human history thanks to research initiated in the twenties of the twentieth century by paleontologist Raymond Vaufrey and continued in the seventies.
The cave is located about sixty meters above present sea level, and has returned 6 meters of anthropic deposit dated to the Mesolithic and Neolithic.
In addition to numerous engravings and numerous testimonies of material culture – such as burins and scrapers – were also found faunal remains of both deer, wild boar and roe deer and marine products.
Finally, of great interest are the traces of burials dating back to the seventh millennium that denote the funerary use of the cave.
