Origins and History

The origins of the Procession date back to the 16th century, when the Confraternity of San Michele began to represent the Passion and Death of Christ through sculptural groups called "Mysteries". These imposing works of sacred art are made of wood, canvas and glue, and have been enriched over the centuries with refined details, thanks to the work of the artisans of Trapani.

The Mysteries and Their Meaning

The procession is made up of 20 groups of statues, each of which represents a moment of the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion, up to the Deposition in the Sepulchre. The sacred representations are entrusted to the Maestranze (artisan and professional corporations), who for centuries have passed down the privilege of carrying the Mysteries on their shoulders along the processional route.

The Route and Rhythm of the Procession

The Mysteries are carried on the shoulders of the bearers, following the characteristic movement called "annacata", a sort of rhythmic oscillation that gives the procession a solemn and almost dancing pace. The Procession begins on the afternoon of Good Friday from the Church of Purgatory and passes through the main streets of the historic center of Trapani, accompanied by musical bands that perform the traditional funeral marches.

Tradition and Devotion

The Procession of the Mysteries is much more than a religious event: it is a real collective rite that involves the faithful, citizens and tourists in an emotional and intense experience. Every year, thousands of people follow the procession until its conclusion on the afternoon of Holy Saturday, when the groups return to the Church of Purgatory.

This is an unmissable event for those who want to experience the spirituality and culture of Trapani in a unique and evocative context.
