Salt Culture Museum
The salt museum located in contrada Nubia is a vivid testimony to the union between the Trapani area and its industriousness that has existed practically since time immemorial. Visiting it allows one to discover the harmonies of a territory, those between sea and land, and the ancient industriousness of the Trapanians in the field of salt-growing, which is more an art than a profession. Included in the European Union's official guide to Mediterranean museums, it is housed in an ancient baglio. Within its stone walls, it houses a mill in excellent condition, used for milling crystals: the mills represent, together with the multicoloured salt pans, a unique landscape in the Mediterranean.
In the 18th-century building, which can be visited all year round, there are also fact sheets full of information on the activities and panels reconstructing the phases of the work cycle, as well as old tools used by the salt workers and black and white photos that immortalise how work was done in the past. Thanks to a guided tour, therefore, you can discover and relive the history that characterises this area of Western Sicily and walk along the canals that divide the various basins of the salt pans, immersing yourself in an evocative and colourful atmosphere. The Culcasi Salt Mine, in fact, is one of the most beautiful and oldest in the area, built as far back as 1500.
