A guided tour with a specialist focus, led by an archaeologist and dedicated to the Doric Temple and its context.
During the visit, participants will explore the history of the ancient Elymian city, ancient sources on the origins of the Segestans, construction techniques and architectural features that make the temple unique, as well as hypotheses regarding the monument’s incompletion and symbolic significance.
The Doric Temple of Segesta is one of the few remaining examples of its kind and is considered among the most refined and harmonious sacred structures of antiquity.
Visitors will receive historical and geographical context about the ancient Elymian colony of Segesta and some of the traditions surrounding the origins of the Segestans.
After a historical and archaeological introduction beginning at the ticket office, the archaeologist will guide visitors to the Doric Temple area, providing a compelling narrative on construction techniques used in these remarkable sacred buildings.
The tour delves into the architectural elements typical of Doric temples and highlights a series of details that make the Segestan monument a true exemplum among sacred structures: visitors will observe first-hand the architectural solutions and optical refinements applied, and discover that the stone Doric temple actually has wooden origins, with each carved element once having a precise structural role.
After hearing the latest findings on the attribution of worship within the temple, visitors will be free to continue exploring the site on their own.
